Americans need lawyers for all sorts of reasons. They may have a business issue that requires a legal resolution, seek representation in a divorce or custody case, or need legal representation in a criminal case. While the reasons are practically innumerable, the steps that should be taken to find and hire a trusted attorney are fairly straightforward.

Hiring a lawyer can be a bit overwhelming especially if you are dealing with a criminal case in which felony or misdemeanor charges are pending. Getting the right advice from someone who has expertise in the field you need can make a world of difference in the consequences or outcomes of the case.

Let’s examine how you can find an experienced lawyer that will be an integral member of your legal team.

Ask For Referrals

Since most Americans don’t have a regular lawyer on retainer, they often find themselves at a loss as to who to call in the case of being charged with a DUI, domestic violence, firearm charges, probation charges, or drug charges. As a Criminal Defense Attorney in these areas, many of my clients find me by way of referrals from the client’s family, friends, or co-workers who have heard about my cases.

One of the top qualifications of legal representation for many clients (beyond legal expertise) is finding a lawyer they can talk to comfortably, honestly, and openly about their case. Friends and relatives are a good place to start as expertise, reputation, and compassion are hard to determine on a simple Google search of “lawyers.”

Consider Specialties

Before you hire the first lawyer you can find, consider the area of specialty you may need to win your case. Not every lawyer deals in criminal defense, estate planning, or child custody cases. You probably don’t want to hire a divorce attorney to defend you in a criminal case and vice versa.

My office here at Patrick Conway Law handles all manner of criminal cases including DUI, firearms cases, probation violations, drug charges, violent crimes, and domestic violence. I fight zealously for your rights and to get the resolution you desire in your unique case.

Check With the State Bar Association

If your search for a lawyer to take on your case is not found with the referrals of friends or relatives who know your particular circumstances, you may want to consult with the local Bar Associations who may be able to point you in the direction of a seasoned lawyer who can handle your case. You can also find your bar’s website through your favorite search engine, or through the ABA’s interactive state-by-state lawyer-referral directory. I am proudly a member of both the Massachusetts Bar Association and the Essex County Bar Association.

As your search to hire a lawyer for your case, consider meeting a few of your top picks for a free consultation. Keep in mind that you will be working closely with this person and you will want to be comfortable telling them all about the details of your case.
